Nintendo closed down the Wii U and 3DS eShops on Monday 27th March, 2023, meaning that you are no longer able to buy digital games on either platform. Online play for these consoles was shut down on Monday 8th April 2024.
Credit card payment support on these eShops ended earlier, on 23rd May 2022, and Nintendo eShop cards ceased to be redeemable from 29th August 2022.

When does online play end for 3DS and Wii U?
Online play for 3DS and Wii U no longer functions after 8th April 2024. Online features and functionality in any game that has them doesn't work anymore.
This means that online play and any other functionality that uses online communication ended for 3DS and Wii U software. This includes PvP versus matches, co-op play, leaderboard rankings, and data distribution.
More specifically, you can't play online races in Mario Kart 7 or visit friends' towns in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Stuff like that.
Which 3DS and Wii U models does this apply to?
All of them.
So that includes New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS, Wii U Deluxe, and Wii U Basic.
Which 3DS and Wii U games are affected?
Well, lots. But if you want a quick gander at some of the most popular online titles on each system, then here's a quick breakdown:

Can I still play 3DS and Wii U games offline?
Yes, although any modes that require online connections or communication of any sort don't work anymore.
So, you are able to play the single-player component of Splatoon, for example, but online matches aren't available.
What about StreetPass and Spotpass on the 3DS?
StreetPass works, but Spotpass doesn't.
StreetPass utilises local communication between 3DS consoles, meaning it's not tied to online services. Theoretically, then, it should remain functional indefinitely, though we can't state this with 100% confidence.
SpotPass, however, does utilise online communication, so it no longer works beyond April 2024. So, you can no longer be able to receive new panels in Puzzle Swap (although you should be able to still get missing puzzle pieces for panels you already have via StreetPass, if you meet someone who's got a piece you need).
Here's Nintendo's exact response via its official support page, which also covers SpotPass:
StreetPass uses local communication between Nintendo 3DS family systems, meaning that it will still be available even after online services end. However, because SpotPass uses online communication, SpotPass features will no longer be available.
For example, you will be able to use StreetPass in StreetPass Mii Plaza, which is pre-installed on Nintendo 3DS family systems, but you will no longer be able to use features that use online communication (such as receiving new panels in Puzzle Swap).
Does this also affect Nintendo Badge Arcade on the 3DS?
Yes - Nintendo stated that in conjunction with the discontinuation of online services for 3DS and Wii U, features for Nintendo Badge Arcade also ended in April 2024.
The app will display an error message when launched, so you can't use it at all, including the Practice Catcher.
Nintendo has also stated that it is no longer be possible to place badges in the badge box, meaning that users will only have access to a maximum of 100 categories and 1,000 badges that are in the badge box. It recommends that users finish placing badges prior to April 2024, and also back up any additional data on multiple SD cards.

Can I still redownload games?
As long as you already own a game on the 3DS or Wii U, you'll be able to redownload it from the eShop "for the foreseeable future".
That means that redownloading is still possible after April 2024, but we don't know how long for.
Can I still download software updates?
Software updates will be made available "for the foreseeable future" as well.
Can I still download free software?
Free software, including "free-to-start" software like Nintendo Badge Arcade, is no longer available for download since March 2023. It disappeared with the rest of the games.
Can I still add funds to buy games?
No, as of March 2023, adding funds to the 3DS and Wii U eShops is no longer possible.
Before that date, you were still able to add funds if your Nintendo Network ID (used on 3DS and Wii U) was linked with your Nintendo Account (used on Switch). If so, your eShop funds were shared across the Nintendo Switch eShop and the 3DS/Wii U eShops.
You had until 11th March 2024 to merge your 3DS and Wii U Nintendo Network ID with your Nintendo Account.

Does this affect physical games?
No, online functionality aside, physical games will still work just fine. As long as you're taking good care of them.
Can I still buy Nintendo eShop cards that say they're for Wii U/3DS? Will they work on Switch?
If you visit a shop that still sells Switch eShop cards compatible with Wii U and 3DS, you can still purchase them ā they'll work just fine on the Nintendo Switch, and you'll be able to input the codes on the Switch eShop.
Can I still purchase in-game content?
After March 2023, you cannot purchase in-game content, including:
Anything from Nintendo Badge Arcade
The StreetPass Mii Plaza DLC games
Any themes from the 3DS theme shop
An annual pass for PokƩmon Bank
Passes and DLC for Wii Sports Club's various sports
PokƩmon Bank will, however, become a free service after March 2023, so you probably shouldn't be paying for it anyway. It will remain available after the online cut-off date (8th April 2024), although The PokƩmon Company is encouraging players to migrate their collection to PokƩmon HOME.
PokƩ Transporter will also continue to function for an undisclosed period post-April 2024.

Yes and no. You can't buy any new ones after March 2023, but you can download "a small number of free themes".
Which means all the wicked SEGA-themed ones are gone, unfortunately.
Will I still be able to perform a 3DS system transfer after the online shutdown?
Yes!
System transfers between 3DS consoles ā which migrate all your digital game purchases and licences, saves, and other information to different 3DS system ā require an internet connection and authentication via Nintendo's servers.
We reached out for clarification and Nintendo UK confirmed that 3DS system transfers will still be possible after the online service ceases operation in April 2024 with the following statement:
"Yes, Nintendo 3DS system transfer will still be available for the foreseeable future."

When did the 3DS eShop close?
Same here ā the 3DS eShop closed on 27th March 2023.
Purchases of Fire Emblem Fates from the 3DS eShop were halted earlier on 28th February 2023 thanks to the requirement to play to a certain point in the game before choosing a path and deciding which version of the game you were going to play. The additional DLC was available up to the full eShop closure date of 27th March, although obviously that is now no longer available either.

WHY is this happening?
Here's Nintendo's statement on the subject of the eShop shutdown:
"This is part of the natural lifecycle for any product line as it becomes less used by consumers over time. We are providing this notice more than a year in advance of the end of purchases so users will have plenty of time to prepare."
Does this affect the Nintendo Switch eShop?
No, the Nintendo Switch eShop will still work just fine. Who knows, it might run even better now that Nintendo has more free servers, but let's not count our eShop chickens before they've hatched.
But no. Realistically, no effect whatsoever on the Switch eShop.
What about the Virtual Console?
Sadly, the Virtual Consoles ā which housed more than 530 classic games, available to purchase and download ā are no more since March 2023.
Nintendo's FAQ on the subject of the eShop closures initially addressed this, but the details were soon removed from the page. Here's what they originally said (you can also click here to access the archived page yourself):
Once it is no longer possible to purchase software in Nintendo eShop on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, many classic games for past platforms will cease to be available for purchase anywhere. Will you make classic games available to own some other way? If not, then why? Doesnāt Nintendo have an obligation to preserve its classic games by continually making them available for purchase?
Across our Nintendo Switch Online membership plans, over 130 classic games are currently available in growing libraries for various legacy systems. The games are often enhanced with new features such as online play.
We think this is an effective way to make classic content easily available to a broad range of players. Within these libraries, new and longtime players can not only find games they remember or have heard about, but other fun games they might not have thought to seek out otherwise.
We currently have no plans to offer classic content in other ways.
What does it mean that they removed this section from the FAQ? We can't say. We can hope that the Virtual Console will return someday, but for now, it's just a hope.
Nintendo's stance is that the Nintendo Switch Online service will replace the Virtual Console, and with the addition of Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo 64 games, the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service has grown since launch.

So, in summary: the eShop and online play is gone. All digital media is fleeting, so play video games while you can. And preferably, buy them physically ā because who knows when they'll be cruelly ripped from you.

Ugh I hate how disposable these systems are perceived as. I still play my 3DS and Wii regularly. Who cares if they don't have the latest graphics? I'm sure I will continue to play 3DS especially as long as I have a working system, even decades later.

I have given myself a Ā£200 limit on my wishlist and that will cover them all i think. It's my own fault. I should have bought them throughout its life cycle. I'm stupid and it hurts.
I still can't believe that TLoZ: BotW for the Wii U will be incomplete one day when we cannot redownload software and the DLC is gone forever.
Personally, i think this hurts me a lot more than if the Nintendo Switch's shop closes because of the virtual console games.
This has been on my mind since it was announced lol.

This honestly upsets me and it is something I have yet to understand. It makes no sense to me.
Once this happens we're talking (give or take) 1,440 EShop Exclusives murdered. This isn't even counting DLCs or any other additional content that may be available.
As someone who still plays on their 3DS and even Wii U this hurts people like us the most, especially if there are games we legitimately want that are EShop Exclusives or can only get on EShop (DLC and Older Games such a N64, Gameboy, Wii, Etc.).
I want to make the best out of my Wii U but if they go through with this, I can only get so much until they decided to screw us over.....
I don't get why they don't simply just remove the Classic Games they want to preserve and remove ANY and ALL Retail games from the shop! Where the only things downloadable are EShop Exclusives, Demos, DLC, and Older Classic Games that AREN'T on the Switches list.....
Worse thing about this whole thing is that nothing can be done about it.....

First of all, no. You're not. That would be the minimum of decency, but you have given about THREE MONTHS notice, given that shutting down the ability to add funds is, itself, effectively the start of the closure.

Concerning the virtual console games, will they be playable as normal if they are purchased and downloaded onto the 3DS? For instance, I currently have 4 virtual console titles on my 3DS. After the shop closes, will I be able to access those games as usual, or will they be removed along with the removal of the eShop?

@semudara Exactly how I felt. I initially assumed I would have the course of an entire year to slowly purchase games I wanted to play. Turns out, I have to front all the money now. That's just not feasible for everyone. It's an extremely deceptive move to announce it as "closing in March 2023."

Iām proud to say I didnāt even attempt to shop for toilet paper until many months after the big shortage scare (end of 2020?), and all I had was one of those 12 pack bags or something, possibly less. Ya know, enough for awhile (bachelor pad), but not stockpiled.

The thing is I changed the date on my 2ds to see if it even stops the discontinuation. Surprisingly it worked. I was able to put in an eshop gift card and buy 3 different things for the virtual console. Now I tried it on my Wii u after the 24th in May and it did not work. But I changed the date off the 2ds a day before on the 22nd. so just putting it out there if you have your 2ds set before may 23rd then just buy as many eshop girt cards as you can. But I think if it is still active for the discontinuation it will probably not work before Aug 29.

I've always wondered why Nintendo does this? Does it hurt anything to leave things like the shop or hulu or youtube active on the WiiU? Just say there will be no support/updates/etc for these things & let us keep them. The fact that the WiiU is over a decade old & nintendo is still charging $60 for WiiU titles is mind blowing to me. You would think as we get closer to the date that they would heavily discount games but as we know from previous experience they are going to try & get $60 a game until they close it up. Im modding my WiiU this weekend. If they are going to throw our consoles in the digital trashcan then I don't feel guilty about hacking the WiiU. Sorry, not sorry.

Going by what happened with Wii you will be able to access the games you have already purchased, just not be able to buy new ones, im not sure about transferring licence's to new systems but the games you have on your 3ds should be fine.

The virtual console thing is the most frustrating since as mentioned prior its replacement (NSO) doesn't give you the option to buy the games meaning accessing the games are dependant on the service itself.
I would have absolutely loved to see the virtual console come back alongside some new features (more screen options etc) though unfortunately even when nintendo did make some of their legacy games available to buy digitally on switch (mario 3d all stars, fire emblem) they were delisted sometime later.

I am upset about it, but there's nothing i can do. I bought my wii u in 2015, and it's very sad to see this system is dying, first the Miiverse and now the eShop, and the same for 3DS i bought my portable in 2022, and even with me not using the miiverse i still enjoyed this console. Both of them are good consoles and all i can do is to keep using them.

I still remember when the virtual console was announced in 06. I doubt they said explicitly but it was very easy to believe that this would be forever, or the titles would carry over to new consoles. How wrong we were.

The 3DS has SO MANY great games! Though I admit it's gathered dust, and I barely have time for the great games on Switch.
I had to dig around to find my plug for my 3DS. I hope it turns on or I'll be really sad. I have a lot of games for it I'd never get rid of. I even have a Kirby hard shell for it. Granted I still have a GBA SP for the handful of GB games I kept but don't play.

I was able to get Ultra Sun and Omega Ruby this past week. I would have liked to grab Y as well, but I didnāt have enough money. It sucks that the eshop is closing down, but I canāt say it is a terrible decision for Nintendo. I doubt they were making much money on it.

@hunt3r_Cr0wl3y While it would be nice to have an option to buy the games for those who want it couldn't agree more with you, especially if you share a family plan with family and/or friends and so pay only around ā¬10 a year like I do, not to mention that we won't lose NSO completely once it gets discontinued since you download the apps and they simply check weekly if you still have the subscription so I'm sure someone will at least mod them to remove that check by then.

The main issue i have is less the price and more that access to the games is dependant on the service.
With digital purchases you are still able to play the games you download even after the online store goes down or if a game is delisted where's with NSO there is none of that, when the service ends or if a game is somehow delisted then you cant play it any more, the game and save files are gone.
With other services like on playstation or Xbox there is an option to buy the games on the service if you want to keep them, the same also applies with the DLC on NSO, you can buy DLC like for mario kart etc on its own but with the legacy games like NES, snes n64 etc there is no "buy and keep" option.
ideally i would love to see the games available to buy in the same way you can with the DLC, that way the service is still there but its not the only way to play the games.

It is somewhat reassuring that its just an online check which could be worked around in the future when the service isnt available.
i would hope that ideally they would add the option so it wouldnt be needed but that feels like a pipe dream at this point. it does make me appreciate some of the collections weve been getting at least when it comes to things like the castlevania games or the Mana series.

@mgalens This is exactly why the Wii, Wii U and 3DS virtual console (and the PS3 PSN catalog of PS1, PS2 and in Japan PC Engine) games have been frequent purchases for me in the last year - but I have yet to purchase an NSO subscription.

@jop Thereās a minority of people that really like them, though. I bought a used 3DS and Wii U long after the Switch came out. I bought a Wii U instead of a PS4, eventually got a PS4 Pro and only bought a Switch and Series X last year.
Almost all of my 3DS and Wii purchases were eShop games (as well as many Wii shop titles). I think bought more games for my Wii U than I did for my SNES back in the 90s and the same for my 3DS versus my original Game Boy.
But Iām used to loving a less popular console. I still donāt regret getting a 3DO at launch.

Well only moments away. The IPs/licenses to deal with between companies are less a problem for Nintendo after the eshop goes down (main reason because many customers seem to forget licenses are important, they are why we can't have nice amounts of titles available for backwards compatibility is licenses that are agreed to/available even then dead and no one wants to revive company to companies that do).
Less servers to deal with for these eshops/reuse for something else. The security angle of they aren't using up to date security solutions which is a risk for a company. Sony made it clear, Nintendo it'd likely be the same. Hence changes to account systems, and backends/frontends and other aspects.
For customers it sucks. But at the same time that's the issue with digital, virtual console, online multiplayer (I know will be done later but then again private servers will step in and many have) and more. At least they offered a physical to digital save file utility tool on 3DS that's cool.
Companies have other services they want to deal with, they have license agreements to meet, they have security outdated servers to abandon and change/scrap/whatever the case. It is what it is.
While we want things to be around it's digital, emulation or whatever remaining physical copies of anything old left around and whatever was digital only is just that archived by fans, taken off at awkward times which is really annoying or removed forever.
Companies have to do what they can them giving us 10 years is better than Stadia for 3 then refunds, aka just a bit longer than the Dreamcast did on the market (even if game releases kept going to 2007).
Physical for sure but while digital has a place not everything old can be around forever unless solutions to work around it are in place. That and well for companies why bother supporting something people don't use or licenses/parts/disk production and more besides laws and console life spans can only last so long.

@z-Core the official support page does say it will be possible to download software updates. I've heard some talks of select games with fancy updates that need to be processed as separate eShop items (which would make their functionality uncertain after today indeed), but I can't even recall what titles were claimed to deal with that.

I'm currently inserting the game disc into my Wii U and starting the software to initiate any game downloads, as it seems to be the only way of making sure game updates are installed. Then, there is Xenoblade X, which has it's own add-on content accessible through the eShop, so I'm assuming this type of game update accessible via the eShop user interface, unlike normal game updates will be no longer available.
For safety though, I'm inserting each game disc - I think Call of Duty Ghosts has some additional content too that enables the game to be played online, folks better grab this as well.

As for 3DS, it's a search for 'update' and install each one you're interested in for now or future game purchases. I was surprised to see a Shovel Knight Treasure Trove update that I hadn't installed but anyone buying this digitally in the current sale will get the latest version.

Well, it took over a week and about a couple thousand dollars, but I was able to buy almost all of the games and DLC that I have been meaning to get over the years, but never did. A few I figured I'd not bother with, because they're either available on other platforms, or I didn't want them as badly.
I was even able to get the DLC for Fire Emblem Awakening just a little bit ago, having just started playing the game last night, skipping through the cutscenes to get to the gameplay so I can unlock the DLC.
It's just a shame I wasn't able to play through Fire Emblem Fates in time (for some reason, it was still available on my eShop, despite allegedly being removed a month ago; I live in North America, if that means anything) so I could get the Revelations DLC. I guess I'll just have to watch a Let's Play of it to see what happens.
I just think it's stupid that you have to get to a certain point in the game to unlock the ability to purchase DLC. The ability to purchase DLC should be available from the get-go, if you ask me.
Still, I was able to get most of what I REALLY wanted, plus a couple extras, so it's probably not a huge loss if a couple things slipped through the cracks. Now I just wait for the final countdown.
I just hope that Nintendo will rerelease these games for the Switch or a future system of theirs. It would be a shame to see these games disappear into the virtual ether. They really need to be at the forefront of game preservation, especially digital games.
It should not have to be up to the gaming community to preserve these titles, especially since Nintendo considers anyone other than them doing it to be piracy. It's only a matter of time before someone uploads these games, DLC, and apps to the Internet, though.

The Virtual Console. One of Nintendos greatest ideas ends today sadly. So many memories with the Virtual Console service from Wii to the 3DS to the Wii U. It's was on the Wii that I introduced my son to the games I played as a kid and that wouldn't have been possible without the Virtual Console. Heck the Virtual Console is what made me want a Wii in the first place when Nintendo first announced it. It will be sad that, after today that name will be dead. So long Virtual Console and thanks for the memories.

@jco83 You can today and in the future so we're told, but those Xenoblade and Ghosts updates are 'add-on' software so I'd download these as a priority, but I'm a safety first kind of guy, so will be inserting each Wii U disc and starting the game to ensure everything is up to date.

@tasuki Yeah, that was one of the big draws for me with the Wii. Heck, I remember having dreams about unboxing the Wii (back when it was still known as the Revolution) and playing the Virtual Console games. So it's definitely a sad day.

For this day only, I'm bringing my Wii U and Switch to work. The internet there is way more stable than at home.
EDIT: I just downloaded a game from the Wii U eShop at work with no issues, unlike at home.
Had I known how fast and reliable the internet at work is for small downloads (which is essentially what I'm getting now with Virtual Console games) I would've brought my Wii U to work since the closure was announced. Oh, well, can't win 'em all.

I'm finishing up my final 3DS purchases today. I really liked my WiiU, but I basically own everything I'd want physically, and even though I still have it hooked up to my TV, I don't play it that often. Now my 3DS on the other hand I'm going to miss the eshop something fierce. It's my 3rd favorite Nintendo system. I'm nostalgic for the NES and SNES, as those are the systems of my childhood, but the 3DS I played for a longer time, and I took EVERYWHERE. Just about every trip I'd take it with me to get street passes. It's the perfect system to play before bed, or take to the bathroom. lol. I put so many hours into it, it's probably the played system I've played. I like the Switch, but to me, it's not a good portable system. I can't put it in my pocket and go. In my opinion, the 3DS is the best portable system ever. I hope a lot of the digital only games find life somewhere else in the future. I can't image the outcry in about 10 years when Nintendo closes the Switch eshop.

Didn't buy anything but I made sure to do a bunch of Pokemon downloading and updates for my system. I own all the 3DS games I would have ever wanted to purchase, so I'm satisfied. The only two games I would have liked to get would have been Samus Returns and Kid Icarus Uprising but I would have preferred both physical. At least I can play Metroid II on NSO online and I'm very confident Kid Icarus Uprising will receive a modern port in the near future. I don't own a Wii U but Xenoblade X would have been nice to have, also expecting a modern port of the game.

@megamari0 Codename STEAM is one of the few games that is still pretty findable in retail stores for not a lot of money.
My belief is once hype/FOMO settles down prices will too. I also think gamers are generally always broke and make horrible decisions so their egregious purchases will have to be, with a worsening economy by the hour, liquidated in the next 1-2 years.

@megamari0 Yeah, like @cashews said, Codename STEAM is almost always $4.99-5.99 used. It's a total steal at that price too. There's a shop near me with at least 5 copies that just sit there. I have to believe that people will eventually discover how good it actually is. Make sure to download the update file because it greatly improves the base game. You're going to want that.

The main issue why official digital game services will never be supported indefinitely, or retro game catalogues will never be complete, or have everyone's favorites, all has to do with licensing. It would be financially too much effort to make sure every game from a given platform is available indefinitely. On top of that, some co.s choose to not allow you to purchase individual titles, either because they have a temporary license that doesn't include allowing for individual purchases, and/or the co. wants to keep you paying for a service. A lot of people overlook the concept of how co.s would rather you pay a recurring fee, than purchase once, and the co. won't see any more of your money. I think Nintendo known that as much as we might have enjoyed the ability to digitally purchase titles, they'd rather we be charged the recurring fee for NSO; especially since not every title Nintendo puts on the service, they know will not make money, or just break even. It's like the cable co.s, they know people aren't going to buy niche channels, so they have to sell channels in packs, mixing the least selling with the most selling.

Just to be sure: even merging funds it's not possible to make in-game purchases anymore, right? I made some purchases yesterday, but they were from the eShop website (and for some reason the automatic download didn't work, although after searching the bought games on the console's eShop it said "download again").
I tried to acquire the Mario Golf season pass, which isn't possible directly from the eShop, but it prompt me to add a card, and it wouldn't get the money from the merged funds I had.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Thanks

I've barely used my Wii U in the Switch era, but I did love it back in the day, and so shopped just a bit over the weekend for old time's sake. I mostly had all the games I truly wanted for the system already, so I kept the pricetag down...

@moroboshi876 I don't have Mario Golf but I've recently bought DLC for various 3DS games (using merged funds) and in each case the DLC could only be purchased in-game, not directly from the eShop.
Try launching Mario Golf and see if there's a menu for Extras or Add-On Content or something along those lines; this would display all available DLC/season passes etc, and if you select season pass it should take you to the eShop and allow you to purchase it. I hope this works. Good luck!

Tried redeeming a game code and my 3DS now tells me codes can no longer be redeemed. Trying online just gets a 902-3279 error..never seen that before. You can still purchase games in the eshop, but I see no reason they should stop the codes working now.

Im definitely hoping that going forward their digital stores are at least better when it comes to future proofing, though the fact that their retro content requires periodic online checks to function doesn't really bode well when it comes to that.
at the very least i hope that any theoretical "switch 2" still lets you carry over and purchase switch games similar to how you can still buy xbox one games on series X and ps5 still lets you purchase a large amount of ps4 games from its own digital store.
It feels like when these kinds of criticisms come up though you often get the "Nintendo does its own thing" and "if you dont like it then leave" (to paraphrase things) mentality but there are definitely times when embracing what is considered the "standard" is beneficial to consumers, such as apple finally switching to USB-C or microsofts decision to backpeddle on their whole always-online and mandatory-kinect choices with xboxone

@cashews @belatarr It was indeed difficult to pass on some of these games. Unlike when the Wii Shop closed, there is no next-generation Virtual Console this time. Nintendo seems to be all-in on leasing us these games, and so today's eShop closure means many games could indeed be gone forever unless you want to emulate. And retro game prices have gone through the roof since the Wii Shop closed, so there is no practical physical alternative for a lot of these games.

I spent way more money this weekend than I thought I would - grabbing games that I won't get to play otherwise. I love my 3DS and I'm actually pretty bummed to see this happen. Logged onto the eshop on my 3DS when I got home from work today, thinking I'd maybe pick up one more game... nope! It's done.

@belatarr Ive gotten better about it over the years but I still falter over it all the time. I see a sale and have to have it - but only rarely play it. Instead I play the handful of games I have 50+ hours on. Because of course I do they are home runs.
I tried to exercise more discipline this time. I didn't buy every Ace Attorney. I ignored the bad games. I still bought a few I probably shouldn't have.

@belatarr I'm in the market between the PS5 and Xbox. I decided on the Xbox because of the backwards compatibility - and I spent roughly $5,000,000 on the 360 Arcade.
If Nintendo decides to make all Switch games compatible on the NeoSwitch - I'll be in line on the first day. If not - it may be a skipped generation like the Wii U was for me.
Unless Bayonetta 4 is exclusive. Then all bets are off!

while the Nintendo 3DS eShop was great a few years ago. it got clogged up with junky crap the shovelware BS while the actual games like Dragon Quest and the Radiant Historia games you had to pay full price for them and the sales werent that great anyway.

So basically, Nintendo is taking our badge boxes and saying, "yeah, we know you all paid money to acquire these items, but we're only going to allow you to access the ones you already have on your system rather than providing you a way to download the rest of them from your badge box on to your system before the shutdown. Thanks for the revenue!"
This is why digital piracy should not be a moral issue. Especially If you paid money to purchase something and the publisher or developer takes that item away, then you have every right to restore that purchase by any means necessary.

The scalper markup on Wii U and 3DS physical games have skyrocketed after they shut the eShop down. Twilight Princess HD is going for $100-$160 for a used copy. Of course, the re-release of Wolf link didn't help the aftermarket prices.
I lost my entire video game collection in a fire and have been slowly replacing most of the things I lost. But I cannot justify spending hundreds on a used game.

So, if I understand this correctly, I can still purchase both Yoshi's New Island and Wooly World on both platforms and have them updated to their latest 2.x version, right? Those are the last two games for the platforms I have yet to play.
When I learned about the shop closure, I immediately bought Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric to get that update out of the way first (I'm a completionist when it comes to Sonic games), since I didn't know if I would have the option, and didn't want to play a game even more broken than intended.

I bought my 2ds xl in late 2018 and it was readily available and marketed in all the usual stores.

There should be two days left, and I tried logging in to Mario maker to download some stages, but it wouldnāt connect to the internet. It worked fine when I tested a few days ago, but now the console wonāt connect at all. Anyone else have this problem?

Nintendo should provide an update to Badge Arcade that allows users to change their badges without being online. Updates can still be downloaded from the eShop so it's not impossible. All they gotta do is make so you can access the Help Desk without needing to connect online first right? Unless your badges are stored in your account, there is no reason this shouldn't be impossible.

Nintendo closed down the Wii U and 3DS eShops on Monday 27th March, 2023, meaning that you are no longer able to buy digital games on either platform. Online play for these consoles was shut down on Monday 8th April 2024.
Credit card payment support on these eShops ended earlier, on 23rd May 2022, and Nintendo eShop cards ceased to be redeemable from 29th August 2022.

When does online play end for 3DS and Wii U?
Online play for 3DS and Wii U no longer functions after 8th April 2024. Online features and functionality in any game that has them doesn't work anymore.
This means that online play and any other functionality that uses online communication ended for 3DS and Wii U software. This includes PvP versus matches, co-op play, leaderboard rankings, and data distribution.
More specifically, you can't play online races in Mario Kart 7 or visit friends' towns in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Stuff like that.
Which 3DS and Wii U models does this apply to?
All of them.
So that includes New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS, Wii U Deluxe, and Wii U Basic.
Which 3DS and Wii U games are affected?
Well, lots. But if you want a quick gander at some of the most popular online titles on each system, then here's a quick breakdown:

Can I still play 3DS and Wii U games offline?
Yes, although any modes that require online connections or communication of any sort don't work anymore.
So, you are able to play the single-player component of Splatoon, for example, but online matches aren't available.
What about StreetPass and Spotpass on the 3DS?
StreetPass works, but Spotpass doesn't.
StreetPass utilises local communication between 3DS consoles, meaning it's not tied to online services. Theoretically, then, it should remain functional indefinitely, though we can't state this with 100% confidence.
SpotPass, however, does utilise online communication, so it no longer works beyond April 2024. So, you can no longer be able to receive new panels in Puzzle Swap (although you should be able to still get missing puzzle pieces for panels you already have via StreetPass, if you meet someone who's got a piece you need).
Here's Nintendo's exact response via its official support page, which also covers SpotPass:
StreetPass uses local communication between Nintendo 3DS family systems, meaning that it will still be available even after online services end. However, because SpotPass uses online communication, SpotPass features will no longer be available.
For example, you will be able to use StreetPass in StreetPass Mii Plaza, which is pre-installed on Nintendo 3DS family systems, but you will no longer be able to use features that use online communication (such as receiving new panels in Puzzle Swap).
Does this also affect Nintendo Badge Arcade on the 3DS?
Yes - Nintendo stated that in conjunction with the discontinuation of online services for 3DS and Wii U, features for Nintendo Badge Arcade also ended in April 2024.
The app will display an error message when launched, so you can't use it at all, including the Practice Catcher.
Nintendo has also stated that it is no longer be possible to place badges in the badge box, meaning that users will only have access to a maximum of 100 categories and 1,000 badges that are in the badge box. It recommends that users finish placing badges prior to April 2024, and also back up any additional data on multiple SD cards.

Can I still redownload games?
As long as you already own a game on the 3DS or Wii U, you'll be able to redownload it from the eShop "for the foreseeable future".
That means that redownloading is still possible after April 2024, but we don't know how long for.
Can I still download software updates?
Software updates will be made available "for the foreseeable future" as well.
Can I still download free software?
Free software, including "free-to-start" software like Nintendo Badge Arcade, is no longer available for download since March 2023. It disappeared with the rest of the games.
Can I still add funds to buy games?
No, as of March 2023, adding funds to the 3DS and Wii U eShops is no longer possible.
Before that date, you were still able to add funds if your Nintendo Network ID (used on 3DS and Wii U) was linked with your Nintendo Account (used on Switch). If so, your eShop funds were shared across the Nintendo Switch eShop and the 3DS/Wii U eShops.
You had until 11th March 2024 to merge your 3DS and Wii U Nintendo Network ID with your Nintendo Account.

Does this affect physical games?
No, online functionality aside, physical games will still work just fine. As long as you're taking good care of them.
Can I still buy Nintendo eShop cards that say they're for Wii U/3DS? Will they work on Switch?
If you visit a shop that still sells Switch eShop cards compatible with Wii U and 3DS, you can still purchase them ā they'll work just fine on the Nintendo Switch, and you'll be able to input the codes on the Switch eShop.
Can I still purchase in-game content?
After March 2023, you cannot purchase in-game content, including:
Anything from Nintendo Badge Arcade
The StreetPass Mii Plaza DLC games
Any themes from the 3DS theme shop
An annual pass for PokƩmon Bank
Passes and DLC for Wii Sports Club's various sports
PokƩmon Bank will, however, become a free service after March 2023, so you probably shouldn't be paying for it anyway. It will remain available after the online cut-off date (8th April 2024), although The PokƩmon Company is encouraging players to migrate their collection to PokƩmon HOME.
PokƩ Transporter will also continue to function for an undisclosed period post-April 2024.

You cannot redeem download codes after March 2023.
Can I still download and buy 3DS themes?
Yes and no. You can't buy any new ones after March 2023, but you can download "a small number of free themes".
Which means all the wicked SEGA-themed ones are gone, unfortunately.
Will I still be able to perform a 3DS system transfer after the online shutdown?
Yes!
System transfers between 3DS consoles ā which migrate all your digital game purchases and licences, saves, and other information to different 3DS system ā require an internet connection and authentication via Nintendo's servers.
We reached out for clarification and Nintendo UK confirmed that 3DS system transfers will still be possible after the online service ceases operation in April 2024 with the following statement:
"Yes, Nintendo 3DS system transfer will still be available for the foreseeable future."

Same here ā the 3DS eShop closed on 27th March 2023.
Purchases of Fire Emblem Fates from the 3DS eShop were halted earlier on 28th February 2023 thanks to the requirement to play to a certain point in the game before choosing a path and deciding which version of the game you were going to play. The additional DLC was available up to the full eShop closure date of 27th March, although obviously that is now no longer available either.

WHY is this happening?
Here's Nintendo's statement on the subject of the eShop shutdown:
"This is part of the natural lifecycle for any product line as it becomes less used by consumers over time. We are providing this notice more than a year in advance of the end of purchases so users will have plenty of time to prepare."
Does this affect the Nintendo Switch eShop?
No, the Nintendo Switch eShop will still work just fine. Who knows, it might run even better now that Nintendo has more free servers, but let's not count our eShop chickens before they've hatched.
But no. Realistically, no effect whatsoever on the Switch eShop.
What about the Virtual Console?
Sadly, the Virtual Consoles ā which housed more than 530 classic games, available to purchase and download ā are no more since March 2023.
Nintendo's FAQ on the subject of the eShop closures initially addressed this, but the details were soon removed from the page. Here's what they originally said (you can also click here to access the archived page yourself):
Once it is no longer possible to purchase software in Nintendo eShop on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, many classic games for past platforms will cease to be available for purchase anywhere. Will you make classic games available to own some other way? If not, then why? Doesnāt Nintendo have an obligation to preserve its classic games by continually making them available for purchase?
Across our Nintendo Switch Online membership plans, over 130 classic games are currently available in growing libraries for various legacy systems. The games are often enhanced with new features such as online play.
We think this is an effective way to make classic content easily available to a broad range of players. Within these libraries, new and longtime players can not only find games they remember or have heard about, but other fun games they might not have thought to seek out otherwise.
We currently have no plans to offer classic content in other ways.
What does it mean that they removed this section from the FAQ? We can't say. We can hope that the Virtual Console will return someday, but for now, it's just a hope.
Nintendo's stance is that the Nintendo Switch Online service will replace the Virtual Console, and with the addition of Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo 64 games, the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service has grown since launch.

So, in summary: the eShop and online play is gone. All digital media is fleeting, so play video games while you can. And preferably, buy them physically ā because who knows when they'll be cruelly ripped from you.

Ugh I hate how disposable these systems are perceived as. I still play my 3DS and Wii regularly. Who cares if they don't have the latest graphics? I'm sure I will continue to play 3DS especially as long as I have a working system, even decades later.

I have given myself a Ā£200 limit on my wishlist and that will cover them all i think. It's my own fault. I should have bought them throughout its life cycle. I'm stupid and it hurts.
I still can't believe that TLoZ: BotW for the Wii U will be incomplete one day when we cannot redownload software and the DLC is gone forever.
Personally, i think this hurts me a lot more than if the Nintendo Switch's shop closes because of the virtual console games.
This has been on my mind since it was announced lol.

This honestly upsets me and it is something I have yet to understand. It makes no sense to me.
Once this happens we're talking (give or take) 1,440 EShop Exclusives murdered. This isn't even counting DLCs or any other additional content that may be available.
As someone who still plays on their 3DS and even Wii U this hurts people like us the most, especially if there are games we legitimately want that are EShop Exclusives or can only get on EShop (DLC and Older Games such a N64, Gameboy, Wii, Etc.).
I want to make the best out of my Wii U but if they go through with this, I can only get so much until they decided to screw us over.....
I don't get why they don't simply just remove the Classic Games they want to preserve and remove ANY and ALL Retail games from the shop! Where the only things downloadable are EShop Exclusives, Demos, DLC, and Older Classic Games that AREN'T on the Switches list.....
Worse thing about this whole thing is that nothing can be done about it.....

First of all, no. You're not. That would be the minimum of decency, but you have given about THREE MONTHS notice, given that shutting down the ability to add funds is, itself, effectively the start of the closure.

Concerning the virtual console games, will they be playable as normal if they are purchased and downloaded onto the 3DS? For instance, I currently have 4 virtual console titles on my 3DS. After the shop closes, will I be able to access those games as usual, or will they be removed along with the removal of the eShop?

@semudara Exactly how I felt. I initially assumed I would have the course of an entire year to slowly purchase games I wanted to play. Turns out, I have to front all the money now. That's just not feasible for everyone. It's an extremely deceptive move to announce it as "closing in March 2023."

Iām proud to say I didnāt even attempt to shop for toilet paper until many months after the big shortage scare (end of 2020?), and all I had was one of those 12 pack bags or something, possibly less. Ya know, enough for awhile (bachelor pad), but not stockpiled.

The thing is I changed the date on my 2ds to see if it even stops the discontinuation. Surprisingly it worked. I was able to put in an eshop gift card and buy 3 different things for the virtual console. Now I tried it on my Wii u after the 24th in May and it did not work. But I changed the date off the 2ds a day before on the 22nd. so just putting it out there if you have your 2ds set before may 23rd then just buy as many eshop girt cards as you can. But I think if it is still active for the discontinuation it will probably not work before Aug 29.

I've always wondered why Nintendo does this? Does it hurt anything to leave things like the shop or hulu or youtube active on the WiiU? Just say there will be no support/updates/etc for these things & let us keep them. The fact that the WiiU is over a decade old & nintendo is still charging $60 for WiiU titles is mind blowing to me. You would think as we get closer to the date that they would heavily discount games but as we know from previous experience they are going to try & get $60 a game until they close it up. Im modding my WiiU this weekend. If they are going to throw our consoles in the digital trashcan then I don't feel guilty about hacking the WiiU. Sorry, not sorry.

Going by what happened with Wii you will be able to access the games you have already purchased, just not be able to buy new ones, im not sure about transferring licence's to new systems but the games you have on your 3ds should be fine.

The virtual console thing is the most frustrating since as mentioned prior its replacement (NSO) doesn't give you the option to buy the games meaning accessing the games are dependant on the service itself.
I would have absolutely loved to see the virtual console come back alongside some new features (more screen options etc) though unfortunately even when nintendo did make some of their legacy games available to buy digitally on switch (mario 3d all stars, fire emblem) they were delisted sometime later.

I am upset about it, but there's nothing i can do. I bought my wii u in 2015, and it's very sad to see this system is dying, first the Miiverse and now the eShop, and the same for 3DS i bought my portable in 2022, and even with me not using the miiverse i still enjoyed this console. Both of them are good consoles and all i can do is to keep using them.

I still remember when the virtual console was announced in 06. I doubt they said explicitly but it was very easy to believe that this would be forever, or the titles would carry over to new consoles. How wrong we were.

The 3DS has SO MANY great games! Though I admit it's gathered dust, and I barely have time for the great games on Switch.
I had to dig around to find my plug for my 3DS. I hope it turns on or I'll be really sad. I have a lot of games for it I'd never get rid of. I even have a Kirby hard shell for it. Granted I still have a GBA SP for the handful of GB games I kept but don't play.

I was able to get Ultra Sun and Omega Ruby this past week. I would have liked to grab Y as well, but I didnāt have enough money. It sucks that the eshop is closing down, but I canāt say it is a terrible decision for Nintendo. I doubt they were making much money on it.

@hunt3r_Cr0wl3y While it would be nice to have an option to buy the games for those who want it couldn't agree more with you, especially if you share a family plan with family and/or friends and so pay only around ā¬10 a year like I do, not to mention that we won't lose NSO completely once it gets discontinued since you download the apps and they simply check weekly if you still have the subscription so I'm sure someone will at least mod them to remove that check by then.

The main issue i have is less the price and more that access to the games is dependant on the service.
With digital purchases you are still able to play the games you download even after the online store goes down or if a game is delisted where's with NSO there is none of that, when the service ends or if a game is somehow delisted then you cant play it any more, the game and save files are gone.
With other services like on playstation or Xbox there is an option to buy the games on the service if you want to keep them, the same also applies with the DLC on NSO, you can buy DLC like for mario kart etc on its own but with the legacy games like NES, snes n64 etc there is no "buy and keep" option.
ideally i would love to see the games available to buy in the same way you can with the DLC, that way the service is still there but its not the only way to play the games.

It is somewhat reassuring that its just an online check which could be worked around in the future when the service isnt available.
i would hope that ideally they would add the option so it wouldnt be needed but that feels like a pipe dream at this point. it does make me appreciate some of the collections weve been getting at least when it comes to things like the castlevania games or the Mana series.

@jop Thereās a minority of people that really like them, though. I bought a used 3DS and Wii U long after the Switch came out. I bought a Wii U instead of a PS4, eventually got a PS4 Pro and only bought a Switch and Series X last year.
Almost all of my 3DS and Wii purchases were eShop games (as well as many Wii shop titles). I think bought more games for my Wii U than I did for my SNES back in the 90s and the same for my 3DS versus my original Game Boy.
But Iām used to loving a less popular console. I still donāt regret getting a 3DO at launch.

Well only moments away. The IPs/licenses to deal with between companies are less a problem for Nintendo after the eshop goes down (main reason because many customers seem to forget licenses are important, they are why we can't have nice amounts of titles available for backwards compatibility is licenses that are agreed to/available even then dead and no one wants to revive company to companies that do).
Less servers to deal with for these eshops/reuse for something else. The security angle of they aren't using up to date security solutions which is a risk for a company. Sony made it clear, Nintendo it'd likely be the same. Hence changes to account systems, and backends/frontends and other aspects.
For customers it sucks. But at the same time that's the issue with digital, virtual console, online multiplayer (I know will be done later but then again private servers will step in and many have) and more. At least they offered a physical to digital save file utility tool on 3DS that's cool.
Companies have other services they want to deal with, they have license agreements to meet, they have security outdated servers to abandon and change/scrap/whatever the case. It is what it is.
While we want things to be around it's digital, emulation or whatever remaining physical copies of anything old left around and whatever was digital only is just that archived by fans, taken off at awkward times which is really annoying or removed forever.
Companies have to do what they can them giving us 10 years is better than Stadia for 3 then refunds, aka just a bit longer than the Dreamcast did on the market (even if game releases kept going to 2007).
Physical for sure but while digital has a place not everything old can be around forever unless solutions to work around it are in place. That and well for companies why bother supporting something people don't use or licenses/parts/disk production and more besides laws and console life spans can only last so long.

@z-Core the official support page does say it will be possible to download software updates. I've heard some talks of select games with fancy updates that need to be processed as separate eShop items (which would make their functionality uncertain after today indeed), but I can't even recall what titles were claimed to deal with that.

I'm currently inserting the game disc into my Wii U and starting the software to initiate any game downloads, as it seems to be the only way of making sure game updates are installed. Then, there is Xenoblade X, which has it's own add-on content accessible through the eShop, so I'm assuming this type of game update accessible via the eShop user interface, unlike normal game updates will be no longer available.
For safety though, I'm inserting each game disc - I think Call of Duty Ghosts has some additional content too that enables the game to be played online, folks better grab this as well.

As for 3DS, it's a search for 'update' and install each one you're interested in for now or future game purchases. I was surprised to see a Shovel Knight Treasure Trove update that I hadn't installed but anyone buying this digitally in the current sale will get the latest version.

Well, it took over a week and about a couple thousand dollars, but I was able to buy almost all of the games and DLC that I have been meaning to get over the years, but never did. A few I figured I'd not bother with, because they're either available on other platforms, or I didn't want them as badly.
I was even able to get the DLC for Fire Emblem Awakening just a little bit ago, having just started playing the game last night, skipping through the cutscenes to get to the gameplay so I can unlock the DLC.
It's just a shame I wasn't able to play through Fire Emblem Fates in time (for some reason, it was still available on my eShop, despite allegedly being removed a month ago; I live in North America, if that means anything) so I could get the Revelations DLC. I guess I'll just have to watch a Let's Play of it to see what happens.
I just think it's stupid that you have to get to a certain point in the game to unlock the ability to purchase DLC. The ability to purchase DLC should be available from the get-go, if you ask me.
Still, I was able to get most of what I REALLY wanted, plus a couple extras, so it's probably not a huge loss if a couple things slipped through the cracks. Now I just wait for the final countdown.
I just hope that Nintendo will rerelease these games for the Switch or a future system of theirs. It would be a shame to see these games disappear into the virtual ether. They really need to be at the forefront of game preservation, especially digital games.
It should not have to be up to the gaming community to preserve these titles, especially since Nintendo considers anyone other than them doing it to be piracy. It's only a matter of time before someone uploads these games, DLC, and apps to the Internet, though.

The Virtual Console. One of Nintendos greatest ideas ends today sadly. So many memories with the Virtual Console service from Wii to the 3DS to the Wii U. It's was on the Wii that I introduced my son to the games I played as a kid and that wouldn't have been possible without the Virtual Console. Heck the Virtual Console is what made me want a Wii in the first place when Nintendo first announced it. It will be sad that, after today that name will be dead. So long Virtual Console and thanks for the memories.

@jco83 You can today and in the future so we're told, but those Xenoblade and Ghosts updates are 'add-on' software so I'd download these as a priority, but I'm a safety first kind of guy, so will be inserting each Wii U disc and starting the game to ensure everything is up to date.

@tasuki Yeah, that was one of the big draws for me with the Wii. Heck, I remember having dreams about unboxing the Wii (back when it was still known as the Revolution) and playing the Virtual Console games. So it's definitely a sad day.

For this day only, I'm bringing my Wii U and Switch to work. The internet there is way more stable than at home.
EDIT: I just downloaded a game from the Wii U eShop at work with no issues, unlike at home.
Had I known how fast and reliable the internet at work is for small downloads (which is essentially what I'm getting now with Virtual Console games) I would've brought my Wii U to work since the closure was announced. Oh, well, can't win 'em all.

I'm finishing up my final 3DS purchases today. I really liked my WiiU, but I basically own everything I'd want physically, and even though I still have it hooked up to my TV, I don't play it that often. Now my 3DS on the other hand I'm going to miss the eshop something fierce. It's my 3rd favorite Nintendo system. I'm nostalgic for the NES and SNES, as those are the systems of my childhood, but the 3DS I played for a longer time, and I took EVERYWHERE. Just about every trip I'd take it with me to get street passes. It's the perfect system to play before bed, or take to the bathroom. lol. I put so many hours into it, it's probably the played system I've played. I like the Switch, but to me, it's not a good portable system. I can't put it in my pocket and go. In my opinion, the 3DS is the best portable system ever. I hope a lot of the digital only games find life somewhere else in the future. I can't image the outcry in about 10 years when Nintendo closes the Switch eshop.

Didn't buy anything but I made sure to do a bunch of Pokemon downloading and updates for my system. I own all the 3DS games I would have ever wanted to purchase, so I'm satisfied. The only two games I would have liked to get would have been Samus Returns and Kid Icarus Uprising but I would have preferred both physical. At least I can play Metroid II on NSO online and I'm very confident Kid Icarus Uprising will receive a modern port in the near future. I don't own a Wii U but Xenoblade X would have been nice to have, also expecting a modern port of the game.

I think I got pretty much everything i'm willing to get, some I would like to have but I am not down to pay $40+ for each of those titles. Wish there had been a few more sales. Spent my last couple of bucks on SMT dlc just incase. Really is sad to see it all go.

@megamari0 Codename STEAM is one of the few games that is still pretty findable in retail stores for not a lot of money.
My belief is once hype/FOMO settles down prices will too. I also think gamers are generally always broke and make horrible decisions so their egregious purchases will have to be, with a worsening economy by the hour, liquidated in the next 1-2 years.

@megamari0 Yeah, like @cashews said, Codename STEAM is almost always $4.99-5.99 used. It's a total steal at that price too. There's a shop near me with at least 5 copies that just sit there. I have to believe that people will eventually discover how good it actually is. Make sure to download the update file because it greatly improves the base game. You're going to want that.

The main issue why official digital game services will never be supported indefinitely, or retro game catalogues will never be complete, or have everyone's favorites, all has to do with licensing. It would be financially too much effort to make sure every game from a given platform is available indefinitely. On top of that, some co.s choose to not allow you to purchase individual titles, either because they have a temporary license that doesn't include allowing for individual purchases, and/or the co. wants to keep you paying for a service. A lot of people overlook the concept of how co.s would rather you pay a recurring fee, than purchase once, and the co. won't see any more of your money. I think Nintendo known that as much as we might have enjoyed the ability to digitally purchase titles, they'd rather we be charged the recurring fee for NSO; especially since not every title Nintendo puts on the service, they know will not make money, or just break even. It's like the cable co.s, they know people aren't going to buy niche channels, so they have to sell channels in packs, mixing the least selling with the most selling.

Just to be sure: even merging funds it's not possible to make in-game purchases anymore, right? I made some purchases yesterday, but they were from the eShop website (and for some reason the automatic download didn't work, although after searching the bought games on the console's eShop it said "download again").
I tried to acquire the Mario Golf season pass, which isn't possible directly from the eShop, but it prompt me to add a card, and it wouldn't get the money from the merged funds I had.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Thanks

I've barely used my Wii U in the Switch era, but I did love it back in the day, and so shopped just a bit over the weekend for old time's sake. I mostly had all the games I truly wanted for the system already, so I kept the pricetag down...

@moroboshi876 I don't have Mario Golf but I've recently bought DLC for various 3DS games (using merged funds) and in each case the DLC could only be purchased in-game, not directly from the eShop.
Try launching Mario Golf and see if there's a menu for Extras or Add-On Content or something along those lines; this would display all available DLC/season passes etc, and if you select season pass it should take you to the eShop and allow you to purchase it. I hope this works. Good luck!

Tried redeeming a game code and my 3DS now tells me codes can no longer be redeemed. Trying online just gets a 902-3279 error..never seen that before. You can still purchase games in the eshop, but I see no reason they should stop the codes working now.

Im definitely hoping that going forward their digital stores are at least better when it comes to future proofing, though the fact that their retro content requires periodic online checks to function doesn't really bode well when it comes to that.
at the very least i hope that any theoretical "switch 2" still lets you carry over and purchase switch games similar to how you can still buy xbox one games on series X and ps5 still lets you purchase a large amount of ps4 games from its own digital store.
It feels like when these kinds of criticisms come up though you often get the "Nintendo does its own thing" and "if you dont like it then leave" (to paraphrase things) mentality but there are definitely times when embracing what is considered the "standard" is beneficial to consumers, such as apple finally switching to USB-C or microsofts decision to backpeddle on their whole always-online and mandatory-kinect choices with xboxone

@cashews @belatarr It was indeed difficult to pass on some of these games. Unlike when the Wii Shop closed, there is no next-generation Virtual Console this time. Nintendo seems to be all-in on leasing us these games, and so today's eShop closure means many games could indeed be gone forever unless you want to emulate. And retro game prices have gone through the roof since the Wii Shop closed, so there is no practical physical alternative for a lot of these games.

I spent way more money this weekend than I thought I would - grabbing games that I won't get to play otherwise. I love my 3DS and I'm actually pretty bummed to see this happen. Logged onto the eshop on my 3DS when I got home from work today, thinking I'd maybe pick up one more game... nope! It's done.
But wow, so many great memories and more great games to play.

@mercilessrobot I 100%'d Code Name S.T.E.A.M. It's one of my favorite 3DS games, without a doubt. But my physical copy stopped working!?!? Gonna have to order another, but my 100% save file is gone for good.

@belatarr Ive gotten better about it over the years but I still falter over it all the time. I see a sale and have to have it - but only rarely play it. Instead I play the handful of games I have 50+ hours on. Because of course I do they are home runs.
I tried to exercise more discipline this time. I didn't buy every Ace Attorney. I ignored the bad games. I still bought a few I probably shouldn't have.
I feel you my man.

@belatarr I'm in the market between the PS5 and Xbox. I decided on the Xbox because of the backwards compatibility - and I spent roughly $5,000,000 on the 360 Arcade.
If Nintendo decides to make all Switch games compatible on the NeoSwitch - I'll be in line on the first day. If not - it may be a skipped generation like the Wii U was for me.
Unless Bayonetta 4 is exclusive. Then all bets are off!

while the Nintendo 3DS eShop was great a few years ago. it got clogged up with junky crap the shovelware BS while the actual games like Dragon Quest and the Radiant Historia games you had to pay full price for them and the sales werent that great anyway.

So basically, Nintendo is taking our badge boxes and saying, "yeah, we know you all paid money to acquire these items, but we're only going to allow you to access the ones you already have on your system rather than providing you a way to download the rest of them from your badge box on to your system before the shutdown. Thanks for the revenue!"
This is why digital piracy should not be a moral issue. Especially If you paid money to purchase something and the publisher or developer takes that item away, then you have every right to restore that purchase by any means necessary.

The scalper markup on Wii U and 3DS physical games have skyrocketed after they shut the eShop down. Twilight Princess HD is going for $100-$160 for a used copy. Of course, the re-release of Wolf link didn't help the aftermarket prices.
I lost my entire video game collection in a fire and have been slowly replacing most of the things I lost. But I cannot justify spending hundreds on a used game.

Is it really fair to call people selling old games scalpers, it's not like they have allowed demand to force people to buy them. More like you are paying for someone to store it for a few years, if corporate business priced based on storing it for years the rates would be through the roof.

2DS is my favorite mobile gaming device. That's right, I said the 2DS. It just fit in the hands perfect. I wish the screen was just a little bigger but I prefer it over the 3DS.

How Apple convinced people to spend over thousand dollars on the new, almost identical iPhone every 2-3 years, sometimes every year (!!!) is actually scary. So, if I understand this correctly, I can still purchase both Yoshi's New Island and Wooly World on both platforms and have them updated to their latest 2.x version, right? Those are the last two games for the platforms I have yet to play.
When I learned about the shop closure, I immediately bought Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric to get that update out of the way first (I'm a completionist when it comes to Sonic games), since I didn't know if I would have the option, and didn't want to play a game even more broken than intended.

This is why i play my 3ds Homebrewed with no guilt if they aren't gonna make money off it anymore nor give us a way to play it on modern platforms who cares if I can download any and every game ever released right on it for free

This is way too soon especially for 3ds.
I bought my 2ds xl in late 2018 and it was readily available and marketed in all the usual stores.
In this digital age, unless the switch successor offers backwards compatibility I'm going to have to think far more carefully before any future nintendo software or hardware purchases.

There should be two days left, and I tried logging in to Mario maker to download some stages, but it wouldnāt connect to the internet. It worked fine when I tested a few days ago, but now the console wonāt connect at all. Anyone else have this problem?

Does this affect transferring from Wii U to Wii U? Or the same for 3DS? Got a spare for each you see. And I wonder if homebrew will work after Monday? Mostly for save backup function, and any new online way to play multiplayer in the future.

Nintendo should provide an update to Badge Arcade that allows users to change their badges without being online. Updates can still be downloaded from the eShop so it's not impossible. All they gotta do is make so you can access the Help Desk without needing to connect online first right? Unless your badges are stored in your account, there is no reason this shouldn't be impossible.
