FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What holidays/events are celebrated site-wide on HEX?
We celebrate all holidays that are in the books, although we might recognize other holidays sometimes.
What is the time zone on HEX? Can I change this?
The time zone on HEX for everyone is United States Central Standard Time. (-6 GMT) Most users, when planning something will say something like, "Let's do this 8 AM HEX time." That way, all users can go by HEX time to meet up, rather than worrying about everyone's separate time zones. For that reason, there is no option to change the time zone.
Why are there Google Ads on HEX?
Hex costs thousands of dollars to run each year due to server costs, upgrades, and other miscellaneous expenses that come up. With the help from the donation program, we only have to rely on Google Ads to gather the money needed to run the site, without posting a ton of ads from other ad networks everywhere like other sites.
I installed an ad blocking program so I don't have to view your ads anymore!
You should probably note that HEX relies on advertising and donations. Advertising provides the most revenue to keep HEX going, and is crucial for the site's existence. So, by blocking ads, you have effectively acknowledged to us, the staff, that you do not support HEX in general. While we have decided not to block people completely that choose to block our ads, we instead note who is, as it is easily detectable through effective logging, and keep it for future reference. Most ad blockers let you allow a certain website's ads to be displayed, and we would appreciate it if you would add ours.
I get emails from a @hexrpg email address that asks me for information, or for me to open an attachment.
We will never ask you for account information via email. Ever. We will also never send any attachments to you through email, so never open them. It is very easy for someone to send fake emails pretending to be us with our email address, so please be careful.
Who are the admins? What is an admin?
The Administrators ("Admin" for short) on Hogwarts Extreme are listed on the About Us page and are the people who are in charge of the site. Administrators are thus responsible for the general maintenance of this website, which includes creating new features, handling technical problems and solving user related issues. After administrators are the staff members, who also largely control the site.
So then what is a moderator, global moderator, Head of House, etc?
Since there are a small amount of administrators/staff members and hundreds of forums, we need some help. Moderators are people who are in charge of overseeing a specific forum. This includes locking and deleting threads with offensive materials in them and sorting out simple arguments. Global moderators are a select group of people who have been chosen to be moderators of every forum on HEX and who also have the authority to send users to Azkaban prison. Heads of House are people who have been elected by their house to be in charge of maintenance of the Common Rooms. Heads of House and Moderators should be contacted with problems concerning their own forums and Global Mods should be contacted with user-related arguments or a problem in a forum where the mods are not readily available. For more information about who to contact about a problem, please see this this page.
Wow, those jobs sound so cool. How do I become a moderator, global mod, admin, etc?
The only way to get a position (except for House-related jobs, which are elected by your peers) on HEX is to be appointed by an admin. We notice when users are being responsible and following the rules and when the time comes that we need help, we will remember your name. Please do not ask for a position.
How come some people have titles? How do I get one?
A forum title can either be given by administrators, usually given to people who have positions on HEX, or acquired under certain packages in the donation program. Under normal circumstances, you cannot ask for a title. Some people that have random forum titles might also have earned them in one of the site-wide events.
Aww, I hate my house! How can I get it changed?
While we feel that the Sorting Hat chose the correct house for you when you were sorted, we understand that you may not feel the same way. If you truly feel that you belong in a different house, you may switch your house by participating in the donation program. Please note that if you do decide to switch houses, you must stay in the new house you've selected for at least three months before you may be allowed to switch again. Choose wisely!
Where did all my money go? I had 1000000 galleons last year and now I have 0!
Due to cheating and other miscellaneous activities, we are sometimes forced to reset money and/or items. You may have been away from HEX when our actions took place. Lost money, whether from the reset or alleged 'hackings', will not be returned to any user who makes such reports because of our inability to validate your statements.
What are random events? How come I am not getting any?
Random events are... well, events that happen randomly. They are messages that will appear at the top of the page on Hex. Sometimes they will be accompanied by gifts or surprises. It is all about luck, so if you are not seeing them, then spend more time on Hex and maybe you will. All random events are coded to benefit users equally, meaning there is no way that a possible user has a greater chance than you.
I have been hacked! Someone stole my password!
Please make sure you never give your password out to ANYONE ever. This includes moderators, global mods, and admins! If you do so, your account may be vulnerable because you do not know if someone else has access to that person's account. Users are rarely if ever "hacked". This is just the conclusion they immediately jump to when they've misplaced/forgotten their password or given it out to someone who has used it maliciously. It is exceedingly difficult to actually hack HEX because of the security measures in place, and if someone did hack HEX, it is doubtful they would steal a user's password. As such, if you lose your password or can't log in, have a friend owl an admin and we will look into it. However, under no circumstances will we give out any passwords to anyone. To retrieve a lost or forgotten password, see this page.
I would like to try Role-Playing. Where can I do so?
While HEX is primarily an RP site, there are some locations where users may not have much success RPing because of traffic issues. These locations include the common rooms or the main forums, such as Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade or the Entrance Hall. We have set up a forum specifically for role playing. It is called the RP Central. In addition, users may browse some of the less visited forums where they may find some more privacy for their games. These can be found using the navigational links at the top of the Entrance Hall. There are many random forums throughout the site where you can role-play and even some other forums that are also exclusive for RPing. Check the sub-forums of many main forums, like in the Entrance Hall. Also look under the "Outside" tab in the main menu.
I saw it is possible to join our house Quidditch team. How can I do so?
Indeed, one of the activities we have to offer you is to be a part of several house teams, whether it is Quidditch, dueling or debate. Tryouts are usually open once per term, although they can exceptionally open more than once during a term. Keep your eyes open and check your Common Room to see when tryouts open next time!
How do I get rare items?
Rare items may be traded for or found in auctions. More often than not though you will probably have to search out users who own these items and negotiate privately. Sometimes rare items will be donated in auctions, so check there too!
Oh no!!! I just got scammed in some type of trade! What do I do?
Please report the user that scammed you to an administrator so that he/she can investigate it. It is not likely you will get the object you traded back though. A word of advice: Be wise on these types of things. Make sure you trust the user.
When is registration open?
Due to effective server management, we are currently able to have registration open at all times for the time being.
What are all these codes and error messages?
If you are seeing errors, please first visit the Errors and Glitches Thread found in The Atrium. The first post of that thread should have a list of recently reported errors, but we also suggest reading the last page or two of the thread to see if your error has already been reported. If your error has already been listed, please refrain from listing it again - the programmers keep the thread on watch and already know of the error and have added it to their list to work on. If you do not see your error in the first post or the last few pages, please report it in as much detail as possible so we can start working on a fix!
Where can I get HTML help for my profile? Where can I download images or layouts?
You may make a post asking where you can find the services that you need. In addition, HEX is home to many very, very talented artists and if you ask nicely, maybe one of them will make you images. Do not bother them if they say no though. Image making is very tough. Try looking in the art forum if you are interested in graphics.

I have a great idea for a new feature/improvement for HEX! Who do I send it to?
If you have a great idea, you can post it in The Atrium forum. PLEASE check and see if your idea is posted already, before actually posting. If your idea is posted already, reply to it with your thoughts on the idea as a whole. There are no guarantees on whether or not we will use it though and we are not required to compensate anyone if we decide to use their idea, although that is not entirely out of the question. Please do not get angry at us if we do not use your idea.
Have any ideas for the FAQ? Feel free to submit any you might have! Also, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask a HEX staff member. (See about us page) Fully read the FAQ before you do though.
